BRUCEPLOITATION at PhilaMOCA

On Friday, November 29, PhilaMOCA will screen a 16mm kung fu double-feature starring the greatest of all Bruce Lee knockoffs, Bruce Le! Featuring ENTER THE GAME OF DEATH (1978) and THE RETURN OF BRUCE (1978). This special evening of Bruceploitation is presented as the November installment of PhilaMOCA's ongoing Final Friday Films series presented by Exhumed Films and Cinedelphia.com.

The Bruceploitation genre is comprised of the dozens of films produced following Bruce Lee's passing in 1978. Made to cash in on Lee's success, these films often starred almost indistinguishable Bruce Lee lookalikes with names such as Bruce Li, Bruce Lai, and Dragon Bruce whose martial arts skills weren't quite on par with those of the legend's. Perhaps the most loved of all of these imitators is Bruce Le who starred in a long series of films throughout the late '70s and early '80s that all shamelessly cashed in on the legendary actor: BRUCE'S DEADLY FINGERS, RE-ENTER THE DRAGON, BRUCE AND SHAOLIN KUNG-FU, just to name a few. Surprisingly, many of Le's films are actually a ton of fun thanks to polished productions from Hong Kong's legendary Shaw Brothers studio.

ENTER THE GAME OF DEATH (aka THE KING OF KUNG FU), a title that recalls both ENTER THE DRAGON (1973) and the posthumously released GAME OF DEATH (1978), is regarded as one of Le's best films due to its abundance of choreographed fight scenes and blatant riff on GAME OF DEATH's structure: Le is forced to square off with a different Japanese fighter on each floor of the Tower of Death as he attempts to retrieve a mysterious document at the top.

THE RETURN OF BRUCE features Bruce Le once again taking on a series of kung fu masters as he quests to find a fortune in gold. Featuring all of your favorite kung fu tropes, some hilarious production values and more Bruce Lee references than should be allowed, this is truly one of the perfect, laugh-filled Bruceploitation offerings.
