Big Water Story Fest Workshops
The festival offers Friday and Saturday evening concerts and Saturday workshops. Featured tellers and workshop presenters will be Nancy Donoval, National Storytelling Festival performer and past NSN Story slam champion; Rachel Nelson, 2012 Northstar MN Story slam champion and storyteller/educator; Mara Kirk Hart, author and teacher; Meredith Cornett, author; and Tret Fure, singer/songwriter.
Friday evening's story concert is free, as part of National Storytelling Network's "Tellabration" event (tellabration.org). Storytellers from the community will join the featured presenters in telling short stories (up to 5 min.) in an OLIO (defined by Webster as "mixture or hodgepodge.") Audience stories will also be invited. This is a great way to glimpse the Saturday workshop presenters, hear some great stories, and have the opportunity to spin your own tales.
On Saturday, a variety of workshops will offer many ways to enter 'your story': From You to Universal with Nancy Donoval - transforming personal experiences into stories anyone can enter and find common ground. Heart of the Song & Find the Music for Your Words (2 workshops) with Tret Fure - Heart of the Song explores using your personal and family stories to write lyrics; Find the Music helps find melody for your story and lyrics. Life Stories: Tools for Writing, Tools for Teaching/Sharing with Mara Kirk Hart - addresses ways to collect and share your own personal story and how to help others find and share theirs. Collective Memoir with Meredith Cornett - learn about and experiment with using many voices to construct a memoir on a chosen topic. Inviting them In: Story Performance with Rachel Nelson - a hands-on workshop exploring ways storytellers engage listeners physically and vocally.
