David Cronenbergs first feature film is a truly original take on humankind's schizophrenic nature and the obsessive introversion of science. Shot in the campus of the University of Toronto, a number of young test subjects are observed in the alienating sterility of the empty architecture, while unfeeling pseudo-scientific narration comments on the subjects' sexuality and the rupture of the mind-body link. Rarely seen, Stereo is a fascinating prelude to the thematic concerns of Cronenberg's later more popular work.
