Carmel Jewish Film Festival - Opening Night
LE CONCERT
Venue: Golden Bough Playhouse, Carmel
Reception: 6:30 pm
Film: 7:30 pm

Thirty years ago, Andrei Simoniovich Filipov, the renowned conductor of the Bolshoi orchestra, was fired for hiring Jewish musicians. Now a mere cleaning man at the Bolshoi, he learns by accident that the Châtelet Theater in Paris invites the Bolshoi orchestra to play there. He decides to gather together his former musicians and to perform in Paris in the place of the current Bolshoi orchestra. As a solo violin player to accompany his old Jewish or Gypsy musicians he wants Anne-Marie Jacquet, a young virtuoso. If they all overcome the hardships ahead, this very special concert will be a triumph.

"The movie gives you an accurate feel for what it feels like to struggle to survive and find your way in post-communist Eastern Europe. The tragedy of the past is still present and yet the human nature freed up from restrictions turns in completely unexpected directions. The only way to escape the daytime TV feel is to bring in plenty of sense of humor.

"Radu Mihaileanu creates a masterpiece. I can vouch that it captures the crazy spirit of the last 20 years and the need to make sense of it all. The resolution of the movie is childish and so there were the hopes and dreams of us all in 1989. The movie is a modern fairy tale told with harsh truths and love and compassion."
