San Francisco Mandolin Orchestra's PASSION Concert
The repertoire from our 16th season presents Passion in many guises: gentle but profound echoes of love in "A Time for Us," the love theme by Nino Rota written for Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film, "Romeo and Juliet"; mournful, throbbing "Elegia" by 19th Century mandolin composer, Rafaelle Calace; warm and intimate tones in Rakastava (aka "The Lover") from Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. We have two contrasting Argentinian tangos: the delightful "Por Una Cabeza" by Carlos Gardel, immortalized by Al Pacino in the film "Scent of a Woman"; and the fiery "Libertango" from another of the Greats, Astor Piazzolla. And for our Halloween-time concerts, who can resist the plucked string version of Camille Saint-Saƫns', Danse Macabre?
San Francisco Mandolin Orchestra is a plucked string orchestra with 15-25 members, playing instruments of the mandolin family (mandolin, mandola and mandocello), with guitar, viola da gamba and double bass, conducted by Nicola Swinburne.
