Winter Wonder - A Herbal Christmas
Join herbalist Maria Billington for an exploration of herbal uses during the festive season
In this friendly online session via Zoom, Maria will look at how herbs and nature can help us guide ourselves safely through the dark months - this session will focus on simple science experiments and seasonal gifts. This will include; making vinegar, bathsalts, creating an ointment and a festive aperitif.
This session is part of the Winter Wonder programme from Boundary Way Project designed to inspire and motivate through creativity and connection during the Winter season. Made possible with support from the Culture Recovery Fund for heritage.

1. Pre Workshop Challenge: The Wine Vinegar Making Wine vinegars are a great way of creating non-alcoholic herbal remedies, as well as making delicious creations for salads and dressings. I love the idea of taking my favourite wine and creating a vinegar but its something Ive never yet tried myself. Our method comes from the wonderful herbalist Christopher Hedley and I invite you to join me in this experiment. You will need: 1 bottle of red or white wine or dry sherry 1 tablespoon of pot barley Method: Put the liquid in a crock pot and add the barley. Stand in a warm place for a few days (20 degrees). When it tastes right (usually after 2 3 days) strain and bottle. (Dont forget to label the bottle!) Keep some of the liquid and return it to the crock, this then becomes a starter or mother. You can keep the mother healthy by adding the dregs of wine, remembering keep to the same wine white or red.
2. And if you wish to make along during the session below is a list of resources, this is optional: Red wine, 8 springs of Rosemary, 2 springs of mugwort (if you can get it), 2 organic apricots, grated nutmeg, grated ginger root, cinnamon bark, cloves, large glass jar (large kilner type), mixing bowl, teaspoon, grater, sea salt or Himalayan pink salt, essential oils, bicarbonate of soda, pretty ribbons, sweet almond oil, mixing spoons, pretty jars, lemons and oranges.
