Praying as We Approach Advent A Christian Spirituality Conference
Advent offers opportunity to make space in our lives for the God who is always coming to us, seeking our attention and devotion, offering us new life. Please join author, professor, and spiritual director Susan Phillips, Ph.D. as she helps us make space for advent during our annual Christian Spirituality conference on Saturday, November 7th from 9 a.m. to noon, via Zoom (of course). The conference is free and will be limited to the first 25 participants who register.
Susan writes, In a few weeks we will enter Advent before facing the onslaught of the culture's Christmas. We have been in a long season of quarantining, sheltering in place, waiting with longing in our hearts. We remember Jesus parents and how they were in a strange time of waiting, yearning, and coping with unprecedented events. They were displaced from their ordinary lives. We, though most of us are not on the road, are displaced from our ordinary lives and are yearning to see God with us. This retreat is your time to pray and turn your heart toward God.
Susan S. Phillips (Ph.D.) is executive director of New College Berkeley, an affiliate of the Graduate Theological Union. She is a spiritual director who, in addition to meeting with people one-on-one, also speaks around the world and regularly leads retreats for colleges, churches, clergy and laity. She is the author of The Cultivated Life: From Ceaseless Striving to Receiving Joy, which our Adult Ed class is reading. Susan is a sociologist and teaches regularly for New College Berkeley, Regent College (Canada), Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction program at San Francisco Theological Seminary.
