Whitney Balliett described Dave Frishberg in his 1986 The New Yorker profile:
"Frishberg the pianist is an unclassifiable creation. The blues pianists he once aped lie at the bottom of his style, particularly in his strong basso-profundo left hand. A level or two up are traces of Fats Waller, Jess Stacy, and Earl Hines. Art Tatum comes and goes on the next level, and so does Nat Cole. At the top, like a meadow sprinkled with rare wildflowers, is Jimmy Rowles.
"Frishberg's songs, like his piano playing, are multilayered. One can find Sir William Gilbert in them, and Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer and Frank Loesser. But only in small amounts. They are new American songs. Some are extremely witty, some are extremely funny. Some are fits of nostalgia. Some are lamentations. Some are cautionary. Some are highly satirical. Some are love songs in disguise. Frishbergs lyrics drive his songs, but his melodies are their wheels."
The legendary Dave Frishberg will appear in concert 8 p.m. Friday, November 7, Downstairs at Town Hall, 1119 8th Avenue, Seattle 98101. Presented by Seattle Artists, in conjunction with Frank Entertainments, as part of our new Wits Up! series.
