Saturday Night Movie - Portrait of a Lady on Fire
An island off the Brittany coast, the end of the 18th century. A young woman artist arrives with her canvasses and oils by sea-tossed skiff, charged with making a portrait of another young woman, daughter of the local land-owning family. Trouble is, its been tried before, and the subject has always thwarted the attempt, resentful of this ploy to market her to some willing suitor. So, the portrait must be executed secretly, based on prior close observation (but not so close as to arouse suspicion). Intrigued by each other, the two women soon develop a daring relationship which threatens to upset everybodys plans. This stunningly realised and visually mind-blowing film was a huge art-house hit at the end of last year, but other than the screening at the FilmBath Festival never made it to Bath. Universally praised by critics, heres a chance to see it in glorious big-screen splendour.
