Between THE MALTESE FALCON and THE BIG SLEEP, it seems that Bogie had a corner on the hardboiled detective market in the '40s. Here he stars as Raymond Chandler's inimitable flatfoot Philip Marlowe in a mind-boggling tale of murder, blackmail, and good-girls-gone-bad. Again, the crackling chemistry between Bogie and Bacall is in full evidence so much so that the film was delayed after production in order to shoot more scenes between the two.
