EMDR Kent Conference on Addiction and Dissociation
Join us for two workshops: EMDR and Addiction and EMDR and Dissociation.

EMDR and Addiction with Philip Andrews. Philip is an experienced Psychotherapist and uses primarily a Cognitive Behavioural approach for helping clients. He is also an experienced EMDR practitioner and supervising EMDR Europe Consultant. Philip has worked extensively in the NHS as a clinical nurse specialist and has been in private practice in London and Canterbury for 19 years. He is the chair of the Kent Regional EMDR Committee. Philip is a consultant for a national trauma, personal injury and pain service. Philip is the trauma specialist at Charter Harley Street outpatient addiction centre, and ran a specialist Trauma, Dissociation and Recovery group there. Philip has extensive experience of using EMDR with clients that have problems with addiction that include alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, exercise and eating disorders. He is proficient in using the standard EMDR protocol with this client group as well as the more specific addiction protocols such as the Feeling State Addiction Protocol, the CraveEx addiction protocol and the DeTUR addiction protocol.

Philip has provided specialist training to Independent Fostering Agencies and Local Authorities on subjects as varied as Attachment Trauma, Addiction and Eating Disorder, Manging Stress and Anxiety, Child Development and helping sexually and emotionally abused children recover.  Philip works with adults, adolescents and children.

Working with clients that have addiction can present some the toughest challenges that we face as EMDR therapists.

This workshop will look at addiction through the lens of the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP). We will look at working with addiction with the standard EMDR 8 phase protocol and also look at adaptions to the standard protocol that may need to be made that will include the Miller Feeling State Addiction Protocol, the Popky DeTUR protocol and the Hase CravEX protocol. We will also consider Parnels Attachment Focussed addiction approach.

Live case studies will be presented to you to consider during the workshop.

EMDR and Dissociation with Louise Mackinney. Louise is a UKCP registered integrative psychotherapist and EMDR Consultant. She works in private practice in Kent and also heads up a counselling service for women who have experienced domestic abuse.

She has thirty years experience of providing first counselling and then psychotherapy, and has been practicing EMDR for about 15 years. Louise is currently Secretary of the EMDR Association UK.

Louise has considerable experience in working with complex PTSD and with dissociative conditions.

She also teaches counselling and psychotherapy and is currently teaching courses on Rape and Sexual Abuse Therapy and also on Supervision.

She is currently completing research for the DPsych at Metanioa Institute / Middlesex University, in the experiences of EMDR therapists with CPD and what they think they need to know.

EMDR and Dissociation Workshop: Practitioners sometimes find it difficult to assess the level of dissociation in clients and the kind of adaptations we might need to make for those who are dissociative.

This workshop will first consider dissociative symptoms and will revise Structural dissociation. We will then think about ways of screening for dissociation, including the DES and the MID. We will explore ways in which standard protocol may need to be adapted and will look at the work of a number of practitioners, including Gonzalez and Mosquera, Paulsen, Knipe and others.

There will be an opportunity to practice some of the skills.

Learning outcomes:

1. Critically consider Addiction through a trauma focused frame work.
