Working with Trans Students in Yoga Spaces
Zoom video conferencing
Where you are, WI
Share this event:

with Chris and Qui

Thursday, July 2, 6:30-8:30pm Central
Sliding scale $20-$60

This training will focus on issues related to gender and transgender students, but will also emphasize how gender intersects with race, class, and disability. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on how gender shows up in their yoga spaces, learn language to better serve trans students, and work towards more equitable yoga communities.

The sliding-scale registration fee operates on the "honor system," to keep the workshop accessible to people with a range of means. We trust you to select the price category that's fair for you.

Solidarity Pricing: If you are trans and/or a Person of Color, we invite you to contact the organizer for a coupon code for free registration.

No One Turned Away For Lack Of Funds: If you can't afford $20 and would like to participate, we invite you to contact the organizer for a coupon code for free registration.

About the trainers:

Chris teaches in order to share the benefits of yoga with people who find yogic practice inaccessible, whether because of race, class, gender, sexuality, body size, and/or ability. They teach a vigorous, yet nurturing, class that links the posture and breathwork on the mat to the personal and social transformation that takes place off the mat. Since training in Jivamukti and Ashtanga-influenced traditions in 2012, Chris has taught in traditional yoga studios as well as community-based classes for queer and transgender students. Their objective is to facilitate a space where all bodies, sizes, and abilities are welcome and celebrated while emphasizing consent, body positivity, queer and trans inclusivity, and being mindful of cultural appropriation. Chris is an Assistant Professor of Gender and Women's Studies at UW Madison.

Often feeling invisible in "traditional" yoga spaces Qui aims to make yoga accessible to anyone and everyone who is interested in the practice. Qui is passionate about yoga's ability to heal people physically, emotionally and spiritually. He believes breath is the language the body uses to talk to us and that any information your body gives you, is good information. Their classes focus on an intentional mind body connection, breath, alignment and laughs. Qui works to inspire folks to open up to change both on and off the mat and considers yoga a part of his work, personal and family life. Qui is also a doctoral student in Education, Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Culture and Teaching at the University of Minnesota.

Accessibility notes:

To access this workshop you will need a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone. If you're not used to this kind of online environment, don't worry - we'll help you figure it out!

We aim to keep the sessions accessible to the widest possible range of people. For example, almost all presentation content and all activity instructions will be presented both verbally and in writing, and all visual content will be described. If you need simultaneous captions for the discussions, let us know in advance and we can make it happen. If you have any other access needs that we haven't covered here, please contact us so we can figure it out together: davey@thinkagaintraining.com, 845-417-6518.
