Carnegie Arts Center, Highland High School and South Shore Orchestra are pleased to announce the Ragtime The Musical will be the second annual Unity Event on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Monbeck Auditorium at Highland High School. The producing partners are represented by the following individuals Lisa Woodruff Hedin, Executive Director at Carnegie Arts Center, Matt Domasica, Auditorium Director, David Markley, Choir Director from Highland High School and Troy Webdell, Maestro for South Shore Orchestra. Ms. Woodruff Hedin is, "so excited about the show and our cast this year. We can't wait to get started!" This year, the one night only mega event will be concert style with the entire cast and orchestra up on stage. New this year, will be the addition of 46 students from Wirt-Emerson Visual & Performing Art Academy led by their teacher Mrs. Marion Lynn Boynes. Ragtime The Musical is not only a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a relevant tale for today. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, noted playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. The Tony-winning score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty is just as diverse as the melting pot of America itself. It draws upon many musical styles from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from bold brass band marches to delicate waltzes, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems. As the mission of The Unity Event is to merge the professional, academic and community arts members, we have South Shore Orchestra, the two choirs from Wirt-Emerson and Highland High School and a cast of over 32 principal and featured performers from across NW Indiana, Chicago and the suburbs. There will again be nearly 200 people on stage making music and art for the very fortunate audience members.
