Participants (4 from each category) will perform in front of guest celebrity judges for a chance to be crowned the winner of Beyond idol. Finalists will perform at the Grad Finale.
Beyond Emancipation's unique and powerful project called Beyond Idol is now in its second year. In 2012, Beyond Idol began as an event series to give voice to the talent and expressions of current and former foster care/probation youth, ages 16 24, in Alameda County. This year, at the behest of last year's participants, we are expanding Beyond Idol to become a youth and artistic development program that cultivates the talents of youth in foster care, culminating in a series of events in the late Fall of 2013.

The Beyond Idol program helps a sensitive, often misrepresented population of youth develop much needed confidence and self-respect that will have an impact on how they perform in the upcoming events. But most importantly, youth will be able to apply the transferable skills they learn in the program to all other aspects of their lives. Take it from 2012 Beyond Idol Spoken Word Champion Sade Daniels, speaking on her enlightening experience during the auditions process.
"One judge said to me 'What you are saying, it goes beyond just this competition. You're saying something that every black girl, every adolescent girl, needs to hear.' Hearing something like that was like: 'Dang, I didn't know what I said was that important!' I felt a major boost!"
Registration for Beyond Idol is mandatory and FREE! Contestants can choose to compete in one of four areas: Hip Hop, Spoken Word, Vocals, and (new this year) Dance. Youth can find forms, eligibility, & full contest rules on www.beyondidol.com.
Beyond Idol is presented by our generous sponsors: Dan's Fresh Produce, Haile Girma & Co., Nicely Done Solutions, Ghaffari Accountancy, Inc., & Check Centers. Businesses & Individuals interested in supporting Beyond Idol can contact Ryan Peters at 510.565.4526.
