Series - Moving History

About
Last month, in celebration of Black History Month, Moving History was dedicated to honoring historic local African-American leaders, artists, activists, writers and performers. Inspired by recently digitized footage of the Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith from the Independent Media Center WTO collection, poetry and spoken word performances are heavily featured.

Participating Institution archival content includes:

An interview with Jacob Lawrence at the Seattle Art Museum
Excerpts from recently digitized documentary Fear & the Muse, recounting the story of famous Russian poet Anna Akhmatova (from Scarecrow Video)

Oral histories with Seattle civil-rights leader Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney and former Seattle City Councilmember Sam Smith (from the Seattle Public Library)

Poetry performances from Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith and Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna (from Seattle Municipal Archives)

Oral history interview with acclaimed poet, feminist writer, and human rights activist Mitsuye Yamada (from Bainbridge Island Historical Museum)
