Richard Johnson has done it again! He has secretly looked through my record collection and decided to present a concert of some of my favorite music. I don't know how he does it. This will mark Richard's third appearance on the Studio5 stage. His previous performances have celebrated Leonard Bernstein's score to "West Side Story" (click on the video link for a sample of that) and Dave Brubeck's iconic recording, "Time Out". Both shows were breathtaking. This time Richard's trio will take on the timeless classic recording by Erroll Garner, "Concert by the Sea". If you are a jazz piano fan there's a high probability you had this one in your collection. I think I wore out a couple of copies. Garner's original recording is absolutely joyous, swings hard and floats like an ocean breeze. Richard Johnson is an alum of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, and in January completed an international tour presenting concerts of Erroll Garner's music. He is a truly gifted musician and I cannot wait to hear what he does with this material.
