An evening with Singer-Songwriters: Kate Hinote, Audra Kubat, Emily Rose and Anthony Retka
An intimate evening of music from four local songwriters and friends, Kate Hinote, Audra Kubat, Emily Rose and Anthony Retka.

Kate Hinote has a voice that's both cinematic and operatic, a mood-setting, mellifluous intonation that fits inside candle-lit lounges, late summer night feverdreams, or as a torch song from a surreal soundtrack. The newly formed Kate Hinote Trio, features Hinote's longtime Blueflowers bandmate, David Johnson, on guitar and Matthew Parmenter (Discipline and Algebra Mothers) on violin.

Hinote has always been singing, but it wasn't until she collaborated with her husband, Tony Hamera, beginning in 2004, that she discovered she could also write songs to sing and that melodies came naturally to her. That collaboration has ultimately resulted in eight full length albums and a handful of EPs between their various projects, including Detroit Music Award nominated Blueflowers (Alt-Rock), as well as Ether Aura (shoegaze/dreamwave) and Sound of Eleven (apocalyptic folk).  A common theme through them all is a darkness and melodrama that Hinote is clearly drawn to and delivers.

In addition to performing Hinote's original material, the Trio performs a handful of songs by other local songwriters, which have been recorded at Tempermill Studios in Ferndale, MI.  The studio recording is to be released later this year on Hinote's first album under her own name, a long time goal recently realized thanks to the fortuitous formation of the Kate Hinote Trio. https://katehinote.tumblr.com/

Detroit Music Award winning singer/songwriter Audra Kubat has released 6 albums to critical acclaim in a career that spans over 20 years. A composer, performer, and educator, Kubat's work has earned her a place in the community as a resource for empowerment through songwriting and music. Her methods of composition articulate grace and uncover hidden places that defy easy categorization. An offering of stark and beautiful reality that possesses experience yet embraces the whimsical. She has shared bills with Aimee Mann, Rodriguez, Roberta Flack, Greta Van Fleet, The War and Treaty, Whit Hill, and Jolie Holland, to name a few. Kubat has toured extensively throughout the US and sells records to an international audience. Kubat has developed and facilitated songwriting workshops for Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Institute for Music Education, Detroit's PuppetART Theatre, Camp Creative, Arts Academy in the Woods, and many more. Kubat has over 7 years experience working in music education and bringing the art of songwriting to Detroit Public Schools. Kubat teaches songwriting as a part of InsideOut Literary Arts Project, a local arts organization that helps place artists in classrooms to share, teach, and help inspire. She also works with Living Arts Detroit where she teaches Science through Music and Movement and works with pre-k students in collaboration with the national organization - Wolf Trap. Kubat is a songwriting instructor at DIME, Detroit Institute for Music Education, a music college where she instructs young songwriters to hone their craft and develop storytelling strategies.

Emily Rose is a songwriter and musician based in Detroit, Michigan. Her work has been described as peculiar yet relatable, intimate, and occasionally humorous.

Rose began to connect deeply with music as a child and dreamed of becoming a singer when her parents, although not musicians themselves, played records in their family room. The tender folk stylings of Jim Croce particularly influenced her, as well as the sounds of Bonnie Raitt, and Don Mclean. Rose began composing music shortly after she began to play the guitar as a teenager. She recorded her first studio album in 2006 at the age of nineteen.

After her second release, Cocoon Stew, she spent much of 2009 touring the United states extensively in a grass-roots fashion. Upon returning, she got to work on writing and recording her third studio album, Porchlight Tragical (2011). After an exhausting self-funded tour, Rose came home to a hobby of writing poetry, and returned to college. Her first book of poetry, Cemetery Tea Party, was published in 2014 by Terminal Books. With time, Rose's writing process became increasingly scrutinous and her next release wouldn't come till four years later. 2018's Wake Up Brave was well received in her hometown and awarded Outstanding Americana Recording at the 2019 Detroit Music Awards. She has been awarded seven times during her career at the Detroit Music Awards for her songwriting and artistry.

Rose has had songs featured in movies such as 2016's Welcome to Happiness and video games, including Play Station fours recent Detroit: Become Human. She continues to write and perform regularly. Occasionally, she performs with Detroit based musicians Audra Kubat and Tamara Finley in a trio called Kubat, Finley, and Rose. They have performed at the Ark and various folk festivals in Michigan. In addition, Rose is a music educator, and rabbit enthusiast.

Dating back fifteen years, Anthony Retka's place in Michigan's entertainment scene is etched as a voice and storyteller through music. The Detroit-born singer, songwriter and producer takes his audience on a heart-opening journey into his fantastical inner world. As Retka shares, "The magic of being a songwriter is that I am able to provide an outlet for those who cant express themselves well. It allows me to connect with the audience in a very human and personal way."

Today, Retka's name is synonymous with the lilting melodies that spill forth from his stripped down acoustic sound. Retka has recorded four solo records alongside four full-length studio albums, a live double CD, and multiple EPs and Singles with his former band, Tone & Niche.

2020 promises to be a banner year for Anthony Retka. Look out for his next album, currently in creative production, or find Anthony's library of recorded music on iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp & Spotify. https://anthonyretka.tumblr.com/
