2020 Kansas City Japanese Film Festival
The 10th annual Kansas City Japanese Film Festival is back at Alamo Drafthouse Kansas City! Proceeds from this festival goes to the Taylor Anderson Foundation, a charity to help schools that were affected by the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan.

Tickets start as low as $5.50 per movie or $15 day-pass for students/kids. $7.50 for adults or $20.00 for day pass! (Plus a small service fee for ticket processing)

Tickets can be purchased online, or at the door!

11:00 - 12:40 My Neighbor Totoro

In this classic Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten. The filmwhich stars the voice actors Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, and Hitoshi Takagitells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei) of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan.

1:10 - 3:30 - Summer Days with Coo

Summer Days with Coo (, Kappa no K to Natsuyasumi, lit. "Summer holidays with Coo the kappa") is a 2007 Japanese animated film about a kappa and its impact on an ordinary suburban family. A boy befriends an orphaned water spirit, or Kappa, he found dried up and buried in a riverbank. He and his family help the creature adjust to life in the modern world.

NOTE - A brief violent scene in the beginning of the movie is shown.

4:00 - 6:00 Wolf Children

A 2012 Japanese anime film directed and co-written by Mamoru Hosoda. The film stars the voices of Aoi Miyazaki, Takao Osawa and Haru Kuroki. The story follows a young mother who is left to raise two half-human half-wolf children, Ame and Yuki, after their werewolf father dies.

6:30 - 8:45  Rurouni Kenshin Part I: Origins

In 1868, after the end of the Bakumatsu war, the former assassin Kenshin Himura promises to defend those in need without killing. Kenshin wanders through Japan with a reverse-edged sword during the transition of the samurai age to the New Age. When Kenshin helps the idealistic Kaoru Kamiya from the gangsters of the powerful opium drug lord Kanryuu Takeda that wants her school for his production of opium, Kaoru invites Kenshin to stay in the school. But the drug chemist Megumi Takani escapes from Kanryuu and seeks shelter in the school. Meanwhile the killer Battosai is murdering police officers and leaving messages attached to their bodies. When Kanryuu poisons the population to get the school, Kenshin and the street fighter Sanosuke Sagara join forces to attack their common enemy.
