The group have been described as a mashup of the sensibilities of Ben Folds and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The band freely mixes vocal and instrumental tracks live and on the record, asking the audience to go along for the ride with the lead melody being carried by vocalists half the time and instruments the other half.

Rio Band is home to the best High School Jazz Band in the United States (Downbeat magazine 2019 & 2017). Last year they were
selected as a finalist for the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz competition, renowned as the most prestigious high school festival, hosted by Wynton Marsalis where they performed at Lincoln Center. Nationally recognized as one of the premiere high school music programs, with three jazz bands, three concerts bands, and a unique small ensemble class.
