Sips 'n Sounds of Jazz: The Perfect Pairing
Three Grammy Award Winning Musicians - Tom Scott, Roger Kellaway and Brian Nova, along with Jimmy Calire, Billy Valentine and Missoni Lanza - will take to the stage at Ojai's Libbey Bowl for Sips 'n Sounds of Jazz: The Perfect Pairing, the second annual Libbey Bowl Foundation Fall Benefit Party at the Bowl. Not to be missed, this year's party includes boutique-style wine tasting, VIP lounging, and pure jazz immersion with exceptional jazz musicians.
Tom Scott is one of the finest saxophone players to ever set foot on the planet. He is a 3 time Grammy winner and has recorded with many legends, including Steely Dan, Quincy Jones, and Frank Sinatra. He has also appeared on the albums of Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Blues Brothers, and countless others. Scott is an amazing musician, arranger, and composer.
Roger Kellaway's discography runs to more than two hundred and fifty albums. He's worked with everyone from Elvis to Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie to Yo-Yo Ma, Joni Mitchell to Mancini and Quincy Jones to Michael Tilson Thomas. Kellaway is not only a major pianist, he is a composer of protean ability, writing in the music fields of jazz, classical and "pop", also scoring for films and television. His acclaimed "Cello Quartet" albums are described by some as "crossover", "chamber jazz" and by others as the beginning of "New Age" music.
Brian Nova mentored by the two titans of Jazz guitar, Herb Ellis and Joe Pass, combines a rare mixture of lightning-speed fretwork and beautiful melodies throughout his performances and recordings. His eloquent vocals are reminiscent of Nat Cole and Frank Sinatra. Nova has toured extensively with Steve Miller and many other artists, and was the Director of Jazz and Guitar Studies for the Music Program at Seattle University from 1990-1996.
Billy Valentine profoundly influenced by Otis Redding, Nat King Cole, and Carmen MacRae, is immediately recognized for the theme song from the hit TV series, Boston Legal. Valentine began as a solo artist in the 1970's, opening for the likes of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. Billy and his brother John, as The Valentine Brothers, co-wrote the hit single "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)," made famous in 1986 when performed by Simply Red. Valentine also co-wrote the title track on "My World" for the incomparable Ray Charles. Jimmy Calire was a member and principal writer of the legendary, "Raven", a Buffalo, New York based band that went on to become a favorite of musicians all around the country. Playing keyboards and saxophone, he toured world-wide for several years with the group, America. A musician's musician, Jimmy is at home playing or writing in all styles from tough roadhouse shuffling and Boogie Woogie, to string quartets and straight ahead jazz.
Missoni Lanza has an impressive four-octave range that's intimate, smoky and sultry. Missoni has performed around the world - including her native country of Sicily and all over the West Coast, the South and East Coast. Missoni's song, "I'll Always Be A Stranger" was selected as a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only Songwriting Contest in 2012.
