Cameron and Colleen at the Van Fleet
On February 1, 2020, at 7pm, Cameron Leach and Colleen Bernstein, two internationally touring percussion soloists, will team up for a special, one-night-only drumming extravaganza at the Columbus Performing Arts Centers Van Fleet Theater. Presenting cutting-edge music written in the last ten years, Cameron and Colleen will perform on an array of percussion instruments ranging from drum set to marimba, vibraphone, bongos, cymbals, opera gongs, and beyond. Both artists will play several solo pieces, showcasing music that they have commissioned and premiered. The show will also feature duets paying homage to the artists shared musical heritage at the world-renowned Eastman School of Music.
The music for this concert combines elements of traditionally classical styles with innovative, genre-bending compositions. Several works, including Broken Mirrors by Vera Stanojevic and Trilogy by Dave Maric, weave electronic soundscapes into acoustic percussion setups. Both artists will present solo works for drum set, an instrument that is almost always heard accompanying others. In addition, the program will include to leave these empty fields and Khan Variations, two powerful, contrasting marimba solos by Erin Graham and Alejanrdro ViƱao, and the world premiere of a new solo work for drums by Lindsay Vasko. Together, Cameron and Colleen will perform Sweet Dreams and Time Machines, composed by their teacher and mentor Michael Burritt. They will also present two duets composed by Eastman classmates Andrea Venet and Drew Worden. This show promises to be full of energy, color, curiosity, and groove.
