Tlacuilos: The Story of Hip Hop in Central America (US PREMIERE)
Ths is the first feature documentary to tell the story of grafiiti and hip hop in Central America through three generations of pioneer artists. Filmed over twenty years in eight different countries, it is a living history of the movements evolution from the early days of tagging and fleeing police to the present-day undertaking of large-scale, complex pieces that tell a tale of collaboration and slow acceptance for the art form. Every frame of Tlacuilos brings alive the cultural differences in this small region, whether in the various strains of local hip hop vernacular, the lyrics, the cosmopolitan hybrid of music styles and the unexpected ties to ancestral Maya culture. While fighting for self-expression, they also represent voices that resist longstanding social injustice, corruption, foreign interference, civil wars and mass migration. Ultimately, Tlacuilos offers hope for youth in the region, who find in the artistic components of hip hop a channel for their creativity that takes them away from the irresistible lure of gangs.
