Rossa Crean Presents: The Harbingers
A new opera will be premiering in Chicago this coming Halloween night, and the strangest part about it? It will be a capella! Composer Rossa Crean will be presenting The Harbingers, their newest work with librettist Kendra Leonard, at Rosehill Cemetery in the Horatio N. May Chapel on October 31st, and they think it is the perfect night for such an event. Crean, after the loss of both of their parents, came up with a story where several different cultural figures of death convene on Halloween Night to pass judgement on the fate of a recently-departed soul. Crean explained, I had a desire to learn more about the concept of death in hopes to demystify it, and therefore come closer to terms with the grief I was experiencing. I am not really sure I found any satisfactory answers, but now I dont think I was meant to. It did thankfully however, lead to creating this piece.

And why a capella? Crean makes clear that silence is an integral part of the performance. There is a tendency in opera to fill every possible space with sound, and in many cases, silence can lend much more to a storys unfolding. Silence can bring resolve, but also immense amounts of tension and anticipation for how an event will unfold. I very much wanted to challenge myself in making silence a creative tool for this performance.

Crean has been a steady presence in the Chicago opera scene for several years; Chicago Fringe Operas world premiere performance of their The Great God Pan recently won the American Prize in Opera Performance in 2018, and The Priestess of Morphine, a recent commission for the International Museum of Surgical Science, premiered on June 28, 2019.

The cast includes Heather Keith as the Soul, Jessie Lyons as Azrael, Alexandra Plattos Slack as Hel, Sarah Thompson Johansen as The Morrigan, Ian Hosack as Erlik, and Jordan Harris as Sekhmet. As the Fates, Brittany Jeffery will portray Clotho, Tom Bailey will be Lachesis, and Katherine Dalin will sing the role of Atropos. Emily Brantz will be directing the production.
