Sound Wired Concerts presents: Snapshots
Snapshots explores brief moments in contemporary music.  Each piece lasts for about 10 minutes or less and the longer pieces are sectionalized by the character of the music. Kurtag's  Acht Klavierstücke Op. 3 is a continuous string of 8 short pieces which are separated very briefly, if at all, from one another. From the most delicate sound to the utmost thunderous, these musical moments demonstrate a huge range of sound possibilities on the piano in a short length of time.

Dream Images, from the Makrosmos Book I by George Crumb, is the second solo piano piece on the program. The music paints a serene landscape and, unlike the Kurtag, Crumb sustains this imagery throughout the entire piece.

The Divertimento by Charles Wuorinen is a one movement work that is distinctly separated into two sections. Similar to the millions of frames taken to create a short movie, each gesture of this piece expresses something different to create a single musical work.

Snapshots, the title work of this recital, is a piece by composer and pianist Catherine Likhuta . It was written for French horn player Adam Unsworth and described below by Catherine:

I took snapshots of my favorite features of Adam's playing, combining them with the similar features of my piano technique and the most characteristic elements of my compositional style. When put together, these snapshots form a dynamic and lively album.

Persichetti's Parable VII for French horn is a 'snapshot' from his entire series of 25 Parables. Persichetti says of his Parables, "my Parables are music where I'm avoiding a truth in order to make a point. Many of my Parables are music about other things I have written, or personal things that I have become involved with." Inertia explores moments of space and silence juxtaposed with condensed musical gestures. Energy, however, is maintained throughout these moments of elongated silence. Scherzo by Paul Moravec is the final piece on our recital and lasts just less than four minutes. Like the constant energy of Inertia, the driving energy from this piece never ceases. This piece can be identified with images of a moving train, a high speed chase, or the fast pace of an East Coast city.
