On Tuesday, November 12, Vancouvers leading new music ensemble, Standing Wave presents playful, provocative, and poignant program of cutting edge chamber music by Christopher Mayo, James Maxwell, Mayke Nas, Alexina Louie, Scott Lee, and Bekah Simms.
Chris Mayos They Sing and They Clap and They Shout, for Standing Wave with electronics, is a brand new commission that will receive its world premier. Also being premiered is James Maxwells Finding itself [it] deviates, a new addition to our ongoing 20C Remix project. For this work Maxwell is remixing elements from Stravinskys Violin Concerto, a landmark work of the 20th century. Bekah Simms Everything isDistorted for the ensemble and electronics, Scott Lees Bottom Heavy, Alexina Louies Summer Music (for violin, cello, flute, clarinet and piano) and Mayke Nas Digit #2 (for piano four hands) round out this exceptional evening of chamber music.
Christopher Mayo is a Toronto-based composer of orchestral, chamber, vocal and electronic music. His work, variously described as cogent, haunting anddesperately poignant (The Times) and a steampunk collection of gnarly machine-like noises, flashy timbres, and explosive rhythms (Classical Voice North America), is characterized by its distinctive rhythmic language and wide range of diverse and eclectic inspirations.
James Maxwell is a composer of concert music and music for contemporary dance, theatre, film, and media, and is Co-Artistic Director of Restless Productions. His music has been presented by leading organizations including Aventa Ensemble, Continuum New Music, Music on Main, Redshift Music, Standing Wave, Vancouver Pro Musica, Vancouver New Music, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
Made up of six of Vancouver's most sought-after musical multitaskers, Standing Wave is dedicated to commissioning and performing contemporary chamber music by Canadian and international composers. The ensemble ventures into a wide array of musical worlds with passion and assurance, bringing an audaciously intimate aesthetic to the most complex and ground-breaking music. In its 26-year history, Standing Wave has commissioned and premiered over 75 works, has toured across Canada, and has released four CDs. Notable releases include the 2017 winner of the Western Canadian Music Award for Classical Artist/Ensemble of the year, New Wave, which features work by Nicole Lizée, Justin Christensen, Marcus Goddard, Michael Oesterle and Edward Top, and Liquid States (2013), recorded live in CBC Studio One and nominated for two Western Canadian Music Awards.
