Alto Madness! With Andrew Speight
Hello Friends and Music Lovers,
This will be the last concert of our jazz series for 2019, many thanks to our loyal supporters over the past three years for helping keep TFC vibrant with the art of live performance! Alto Madness will be an exciting, hard swinging concert featuring the best of bebop. The quintet includes Andrew Speight, saxophone; Modesto Briseno, trumpet; Doug Miller, bass; Austin Harris, drums; and Larry Vuckovich, piano.
Our 2019 finally features the renowned master bebop Alto saxophonist Andrew Speight. Appearing at the Tucker Farm Center for the first time in a program that highlights the music of the greatest Alto jazz saxophonists Parker (Bird), Adderley, Stitt, and McLean. Andrew has performed with many top-tier jazz musicians including Jimmy Cobb, Wynton Marsalis and Nat Adderley, just to name a few. After Cannonball Adderley passed away, his brother Nat invited Andrew to tour with the famous quintet performing the music of Cannonball.
Modesto Briseno! This third generation musician has been a long time fixture on the jazz scene as a sought-after sideman. Although Briseno has been compared to Chet Baker because of his ability to sing and play the trumpet, his fat full bodied sweet intonation is more reminiscent of Roy Eldridge.
Doug Miller, one of Seattles most respected bass players for 23 years and was a mainstay of that regional jazz scene for two decades before moving to Marin in 2010. Doug appears in concerts, clubs, clinics and on recordings with many of the worlds leading jazz musicians including James Moody, Ken Peplowski, George Cables, Ray Vega, and Dick Hyman, and he has toured with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Ellington Orchestra, and Ernestine Anderson. Hes a founding member of the critically-acclaimed trio New Stories, and of Big Neighborhood, a quartet that played twenty-first century jazz by merging unusual elements in collage-like compositions that combined unusual energy with edgy improvisation. Doug is also a composer and an educator and former member of the faculty of the University of Washington. Since living in the Bay Area, Doug has performed often with pianist Ken Cooks trio with Alex Aspinall on drums. He has also performed with Benny Green, Akira Tana, Peter Horvath and Michael Wolff since moving to California.
Larry Vuckovich, Composer, Arranger, Band Leader; Larry is Calistogas own jazz legend. The indefatigable maestro passionately works every day to bring jazz to audiences throughout the Bay Area, around the world and to Tucker Farm Center. He has worked with top musicians of various influences, from Jon Hendricks, Philly Joe Jones, Mel Torme, Don Byas, and Red Norvo to today's artists. He has won acclaim from critics and jazz audiences for his deeply imaginative style and repertoire. Many thanks to Larry for keeping it real! Straight ahead.
