In Russia's remote Tuva Republic, throat singing (khoomei) is the chief symbol of national culture. But, according to Tuvan tradition, only men are allowed to perform khoomei and it is forbidden to women. Those who break this rule face serious consequences. Despite the ban, some women in Tuva sing.
