The World of Carl Sandburg
Roger Fristoe, an actor from Louisville, Ky., performs a one-man version of The World of Carl Sandburg at the IAC on October 19th. The program centers around the great American poet/historian/biographer Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) who became the most-known and best-loved American literary figure of his time. H. L. Mencken called him indubitably an American in every pulse-beat. Sandburg won three Pulitzer prizes, two for his poetry and another for his momentous biography of Abraham Lincoln.
The World of Carl Sandburg was originally performed by Bette Davis and Gary Merrill in 1960, on Broadway and in a national tour. The show was later televised on PBS with Uta Hagen and Fritz Weaver. A New York Times reviewer called the show playful and serious, childlike and wise, commonplace and fresh, homespun and poetic and distinctly American
