Blueprint (Kerrville)
Composers often wrestle with the masters of the past, especially Beethoven, when they set out to write their own string quartets. Caroline Shaws Blueprint and Schnittkes Third Quartet both deal with Beethoven in their own unique ways, with respects paid to Schubert, Bartok, Tim Burton and Orlando di Lasso along the way. Beethoven himself had his own masters to contend with (Mozart and Haydn) when he started his first quartets - his Op. 18, No.1 finishes our season.
