Explorations Vol. 4: ATTACCA
New Thread Quartet presents Explorations Vol. 4: ATTACCA, featuring works by James Ilgenfritz, Len Tetta, Jude Thomas, and the world premiere of Chamber Music America commission by Amy Beth Kirsten.

New Yorks most adventurous saxophone quartet returns for its 4th annual concert exploring new music for saxophones, pushing the ensemble beyond its traditional boundaries. Explorations Vol. 4: ATTACCA features four exciting new works by American composers exploring the theme of miniatures  presenting singular works across multiple movements. The program is entirely acoustic, highlighting elements of just intonation, metric modulation and a blending of traditional and extended techniques.

The concert launches with Boston-based composer Len Tettas Five Miniatures and a Fantasy, a metric juggling act that keeps the quartet on their toes, followed by the world premiere of Amy Beth Kirstens avalanche lily, an epic 5-movement work inspired the natural scenes from Wyoming: characters, state flowers, rebirth and recurrences. Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut, Kirstens work is a Chamber Music America commission. The second half features New York City composers Jude Thomas and James Ilgenfritz. Thomas blurs color and key in his multi-movement work Look at the Sky, built entirely on just-intonation, while Ilgenfritzs Trust Fall explores instrumental subsets and team-building through a unique combination of notation and structured improvisation.

Program:
Len Tetta  Five Miniatures and a Fantasy *NYC premiere
Amy Beth Kirsten  avalanche lily *commission, world premiere
Jude Thomas  Look at the Sky *world premiere
James Ilgenfritz  Trust Fall

The commission of avalanche lily by Amy Beth Kirsten has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

About The Composers:

Award-winning composer Amy Beth Kirstens musical and conceptual language is characterized by an abiding interest in exploring theatrical elements of creation, performance, and presentation. Kirsten has written and composed fully-staged theatrical works as well as traditional concert works for her own ensemble, HOWL, musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony, Peak Performances, and the multi-Grammy-winning eighth blackbird.

Composer James Ilgenfritz strikes a balance of complex notation and structured improvisation in his chamber music. His recent Stone residency The Stone residency featured compositions for the Momenta Quartet and Kathleen Supove/James Moore/Jennifer Choi trio. An active bassist, he leads The Anagram Ensemble, Hypercolor trio, and performs regularly as a solo improviser, collaborating with Pauline Oliveros, Roscoe Mitchell, Rufus Reid, and Anthony Braxton.

Len Tettas chamber music is highly rhythmic, characterized by extreme metric modulation and lyricism. A composition student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tetta is also a guitarist and singer-songwriter.

A composer of opera, chamber and chorus, Jude Thomass music dives deeply into just intonation, combining elements of pitch stacking and bending frequencies. An active barbershop singer, Thomas competes and performs with the Hells Kitchen barbershop chorus and Voices of Gotham.
