David Gordon first held a guitar in his hands in 1959, and he's been learning songs ever since. Lots and lots of songs. His new one-man show In My Life is a very personal retrospective of his favorite tunes from (nearly) 60 years of singing for audiences.
The concert playlist will include music and words by Lennon & McCartney, Tom Paxton, Kate Wolf, Robert W. Service, John McCutcheon, David Wilcox, Jacques Offenbach, Hoagy Carmichael, Stephen Foster, Iris DeMent, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marty Robbins, a medieval French troubadour, and a few more. Yes, all of that crazy variety in 90 heart-filled minutes.
In his concerts with guitar David draws on his lifelong love of traditional and contemporary acoustic music. With a rich and sensitive voice and a keen sense of drama, he interweaves songs of love, compassion, and laughter with stories, poetry, musings, and his own uniquely goofy brand of humor. Throughout his life, David's intention has been to open hearts through song and story, and share with his listeners the power of words and music and the joys of living and love. __________________________________________________
ABOUT DAVID GORDON
The Washington Post has called David Gordon "a model of style and charm and an irresistible performer." He's a life-long troubadour whose compelling voice, keen sense of drama, and offbeat humor have charmed audiences worldwide. His international performing career reaches from Bach to country music, from grand opera to jazz, from Mozart to to Fats Waller.
A remarkable singer, guitarist, and storyteller, David began entertaining audiences as a folk singer when he was barely 13.
After conservatory training he established a distinguished international reputation as a classical concert and opera singer, appearing as soloist in great opera houses and concert halls on four continents.
David was a popular and central figure at the Carmel Bach Festival in California for 30 seasons as tenor soloist, lecturer, translator, chorus director, vocal coach, concert narrator, and Dramaturge. He was especially known for his engaging and scholarly pre-concert lectures. _____________________________
DAVID GORDON'S BOOKS
In 2014 David published Carmel Impresarios, the definitive biography of the two extraordinary women who created the Carmel Bach Festival and helped make Carmel an artistic hub in the 1920s and 30s. The 400-page book is also a comprehensive history of theater and music in early Carmel.
In 2017 David released The Little Bach Book, a richly illustrated description of daily life in Leipzig, Germany in the 1730s. It is the only book about J.S. Bach -- in any language -- that presents colorful vignettes of Bach's career within a detailed context of the even more colorful everyday world around him.
