Southern Baptist Sissies
Rather than shooting his story of four boys struggling with their sexuality amidst their religious upbringing as a standard motion picture, Shores has filmed actual stage performance.
Emerson Collins leads a solid ensemble as the central character and narrator. The film also features a Greek chorus: character actors Leslie Jordan (Will & Grace) and Dale Dickey (Justified) as catty older barflies.
The pieces of the play fit together a little too neatly, but Southern Baptist Sissies has many powerful displays of heavy emotion, building to a cathartic climax.
