ELM (formerly known as Segway) w/ The Southern Belles
ELM (formerly known as Segway) ELM is a Baltimore based quartet that combines Electronica, Dance, Rock, Soul, and Funk into an incomparable, high energy live music experience. Drummer Steve Gorsuch lays down relentless dance beats on a traditional kit peppered with polyrhythms and electro-glitches on Electronic drum pads. Locking in on those beats with surgical precision on the bass is Colin Rappa. He has a jazz background and plays tight, melodic bass lines that are grounded in unreality. Rappa's flexible playing gives the band's music an elastic, bombastic quality. On keys and other wizardry is Jon Brady, who's aphrodisiacal hooks, speed and accuracy are the zenith of the band's new sound. Improvisationally, the band will often take auditory cues from Brady's arsenal of ideas, and these can flow like the blood of the non believers. Rounding out the quartet is the newest member, on guitar and vocals, Jon Wood. Wood has an impressive vocal range, and his guitar playing spans multiple genres, but is grounded in his very own style that includes solid rhythm playing, melodic interplay, and searing leads. In addition to ELM's ultra cool compositions and face melting jams, they can throw down a James Brown or David Bowie tune right in the middle of a set and nail it. ELM have been busy writing new material, and will be releasing a new EP soon. The best way to hear this material right now is to come see them live!
THE SOUTHERN BELLES The Southern Belles play a Frank Zappa-esque amalgamation of country, jazz, rock and funk. With an emphasis on song craft and technical proficiency, the instantly ingratiating manner by which this Richmond quartet presents its genre-bending concoctions is embedded with a vitality and vigor that Beethoven would have surely approved.
