SongBird North - Where Writers Sing and Tell (Formerly "Bluebird North")
For the last show of SongBird Norths 22nd season, host/producer Shari Ulrich welcomes David Borys, Luke Isaac and Scott Smith to the Roundhouse stage. Audiences are guaranteed to discover artists that are new to them, and experience familiar ones in a refreshing new context.

BACKGROUND: Since 1995, SongBird North (formerly Bluebird North) has been a mainstay in Vancouver for songwriters from across the continent, as a bi-monthly showcase that features four talented singer/songwriters of widely varying styles, on stage together, taking turns playing their own original songs and sharing stories with one another and the audience about their work. The series has toured nationally, and has established itself in several other Canadian cities. Vancouver remains its longest-standing host city. www.songwriters.ca

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS  May 21, 2019

DAVID BORYS is a multi-genre songwriter who splits his time between Vancouver and Nashville.  Since his 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards songwriter showcase he has written dynamic material for both female and male recording artists in country, rock and pop. His material has been seen on ABCs hit television show Nashville as well as on radio stations in both Canada and the United States. 2018 was a banner year for David as fifteen different artists released material he had helped create. This included three tracks off the debut bluegrass album by Rosemary and the Sweet Sound Revival, which peaked at No. 11 on the Canadian Country Music Album Charts and won the 2018 Covenant Award for Best Southern Gospel Album. David was asked to perform at the coveted Canadian Country Music Songwriter Round during the 2018 Canadian Country Music Awards week in Hamilton, Ontario. He was also nominated for Songwriter of the Year with the Manitoba Country Music Association and the British Columbia Country Music Association. Current singles include Wes Macks Never Have I Ever and Holy Coast by the Heels.

LUKE ISAAC is a singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Thunder Bay, ON. After cutting his teeth in several basement bands as a teenager, Luke first showcased his songwriting skills as lead guitarist in a popular local band called Mouth. His next project, a funk rock outfit called the Apollo Groove Shuttle, brought him to Nanaimo for studies in guitar and piano at Malaspina College. Here Luke discovered that he has both perfect pitch and a rare cognitive ability known as synesthesia, which is a neurological mixing of the senses allowing the ability to hear colours and see sounds. This led him to a more complex and abstract approach to his music. In 2003, back in Thunder Bay, Luke opened the doors to Tumbler Media, a multi-track, digital recording studio, where he produced several Indie groups such as Star74 and Sue Is Fine, provided jingles and voice overs for radio and web, and began composing for film and TV. In recent years, Lukes songwriting has been gaining the attention of notable players in the music industry; in 2010 several of his songs were picked up by SueCo Publishing to be pitched to major labels in Nashville. Lukes continues to write and record at every opportunity, always looking to deliver his compositions to a greater audience.

SCOTT SMITH
As a sideman in the Vancouver roots music scene for a couple of decades, Scott Smith has helped make a lot of other people sound great over the years. From the arena-sized mainstream country of Aaron Pritchett and the heartland roots-rock of Barney Bentall, to a slew of insurgent Vancouver club champs like Rich Hope, Speeding West, The Real Ponchos, and Bocephus King - Smith has been everybodys ringer, flipping between guitar and pedal steel while casually raising the bar with lightning technique and unfailing good taste. With his band Just A Season, Scott Smith switches from sideman to frontman, enlisting some of his favourite players to put the right groove on a collection of songs he wrote that recall an era when folk, rock, and country met in a sun-baked embrace. Fans of Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Richard Thompson and the country period Grateful Dead should love Just A Season's music.

SHARI ULRICH (Host / Producer)
Shari's 45-year career  from Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist  has led to 25 albums, including collaborations with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and the bluegrass band The High Bar Gang. Her work has garnered several Juno Award nominations and two wins, induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year, and the most fun making music a girl could ask for. Her passion for songwriters sharing a stage has led her to produce the Bluebird North and SongBird North series for the SAC for over 22 years, both locally and nationally. She is releasing a new solo album on June 21 on Borealis Records.  www.shariulrich.com
