place/displace
A special collaboration between PIE and the Villa Aurora, place/displace is about spaces  spaces large and small, acoustical and spatial, synchronistic and anachronistic  and the human experiences placed in and out of them.

The program consists of five works, all of which by composers who live as expatriates and/or as temporary residents of Los Angeles. It includes the world premiere of Genoël von Liliensterns (Germany, Villa Aurora fellow) new piece for solo violoncello and electronics that charts an addiction-inducing sonic ground of low drones and raw granulations, Los Angeles premieres of Davor Vinczes (Croatia/USA) bass flute and live electronics work Take your timehurry-up! (2015-16)  a set of miniatures aphorizing the adolescent joie de vivre through the borrowed (and transformed) elements from Nirvanas Come as Your Are  and Mu-Xuan Lins (Taiwan/USA) ..à.. (2018-19) which figuratively reenacts a sense of instant belonging and permanent alienation through integration of flute performance and field recordings from various cities across continents, and the emblematic musique concrète masterwork  Luc Ferraris Madame de Shanghai (1996) , a tribute to Orson Welless 1947 film noir The Lady of Shanghai.  This performance also features a short film created exclusively for this piece and the flutist Shao-Wei Chou by French artist YVD.

The program features Ashley Walters (USA), brilliant solo cellist and a founding member of the Formalist Quartet, who will perform the world premiere of Lilienstern's new work, and dazzling flutist and a founding member of the Paris-based Ensemble 20 dans le noir Shao-Wei Chou (Taiwan/France) who will perform the rest of the program.  place/displace takes place at the historic Spanish mansion of Villa Aurora, situated at the Pacific Palisades with a breathtaking vista of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean.

place/displace  is supported by the Villa Aurora Thomas Mann House, NCAF (National Culture and Arts Foundation, Taiwan), and SACEM (Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique, France).
