Metalheadz / Function Records UK / Phantom Audio / Bristol, UK
Stephen Carr aka DIGITAL, is one of the UKs most well-respected and inspirational drum and bass producers with a career spanning 23 years culminating in a seminal catalogue of original and innovative releases.
His signature basslines and radicalized dubbed out sounds reach back to his childhood where he watched his father run his own sound-system for nearly thirty years in Ipswich, UK. The moniker Digital was given to him by the Ashanti Sound System who immediately recognized then 14-year-old Carrs technical ability at operating a sound system, while also relating the moniker Digital to the future emergence of the digital age.
It wasnt long before Digital used his dads sound-system on his own. In 1991, with the rave scene growing in and around Ipswich, he started to hire-out the system to various promoters, noticeably Danny C who he befriended through their love of the music. This is the time when he really became interested in the rave scene and its music triggered his curiosity toward production.
A collaboration with Danny C saw Digital's first ever record 'Split Personality' / 'Navigator's Path' which was released on the legendary Ipswich based label Certificate 18. His solo debut release Touch Me on Timeless in 1995 was followed by a track that really set the marker for Digital in 95 Spacefunk a limited edition 12 on Timeless Recordings. Such a unique track in its time and so well received that it has been re-released with remixes from Goldie M.B.E, Photek, Future Bound and Doc Scott. Spacefunk was a signature track at Goldies amazing Metalheadz Blue Note club night for several years which brought Goldies attention to Digitals music. This new connection resulted in Metalheadz 021DigitalNiagra / Down Under. The relationship with Metalheadz remained strong over the years. Digital was featured on every Platinum Breakz album, including The Wolf EP' with long time partner Spirit on the solo EP called In The Lurch.
1998 welcomed the birth of the infamous Phantom Audio imprint co-owned with Ipswich based producer and friend Spirit, rising from their mutual desire to have their own base where there was no set musical agenda. They went on to produce some formative releases. Soon after the duo debuted with the release of Phantom Force this track became a drum and bass anthem worldwide. Still to this day, 17 years after its release, you can still hear Phantom Force rocking in sets from the likes of; Andy C, Friction, Goldie & DJ Marky.
While continuing to release music, in 2002 Digital teamed up with his long-time friend and business partner Brillo to set up Timeless Music Group (handling all forms of label management for 12 independent drum and bass labels). Digital also worked closely with two of New Zealands treasured electronic acts Salmonella Dub and Concord Dawn: working with both to develop and expand their European tours and markets.
April 2016 saw the release of Digital Synthesis a collaboration on Function Records featuring top artists like Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Spirit, Om Unit, Nomine, Kiat, Resound, Need for Mirrors, Total Science, Klute and to keep things totally fresh new producers with their own unique styles like Villem, Response, Flava & Dissect, Theory and Mad Vibes. In the process of making Synthesis, he personally traveled around to collaborate with each producer as opposed to sending files through the internet. Digital explains, Id prefer to get a vibe going in the studio because the vibe and end results are more pleasing, and more real when youre in the studio together. As a result of working on this album, I feel that weve formed a collective of sorts that is larger than this project. I also feel that togetherness can be a thing within music.
In addition to regularly DJing throughout the UK, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and US, Digital has released so many tracks that still stand the test of time. His 20-plus years of production includes 3 LPs, countless 12s and EPs on his own label imprint Function Records, and co-owned imprint Phantom Audio. His music has been featured on some of the finest Drum & Bass labels to date: Metalheadz, Exit, Timeless, 31 Records, C.I.A, Photek Productions, Innerground, Commercial Suicide, Reinforced Records, Violence, Horizons, Rupture, Ingredients, Dispatch, V Recordings, Lion Dub International, Chronic & Hardleaders. the list goes on.

After broad exposure to Jazz, Salsa, and R&B growing up, Donahue Holland aka Definition: Positive learned to appreciate the deeper side of some of these genres, and how it affects and drives emotion. His passion for music and mixing exploded in the Los Angeles rave scene during the mid 90s, nurturing this new love for electronic music. Once experiencing Drum and Bass, he shifted gears permanently; realizing that this style was the missing part of his musical soul.
Former resident DJ at Nova Express Cafe, Futurebound Radio, LA, and LiquidBass.net, Def Pos became an LA staple representing these unique sounds. Since relocating to Salem, guest appearances have included Bassdrive, Signal Flow Radio LA, DnBTV and countless live performances all around Oregon. Some of these heavy-hitters have included the Bachelors of Science, Artificial Intelligence, Ben Soundscape, ASIDES, Calculon, MC Question Mark, Doc Scott, Bladerunner, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, LTJ Bukem, LSB, and DRS.
Host of the weekly radio show Atmospheriq Tides, Thursdays 9-10pm PST on DNBRadio, and resident artist at JUICE! Drum and Bass nights in Portland, Def Pos delivers soulful grooves and funky baselines with a level of quality and style not to be missed.
