The woodwind quintet, as a set ensemble, can trace its roots to late 18th century Western Europe,
though it didn't really take off with composers until the early 20th century. Expanding outwards
from that traditional repertoire, Vento Chiaro will be presenting "borrowed music" from Mozart to
Puccini to Mahler, compositions with film credits, and pieces depicting places from the American
West to South America and beyond.
The Performers:
Vento Chiaro can trace its roots to 1997, when the original members were all graduate students at
Peabody Conservatory together. In the 20+ years since, founding members have left and new members
have joined while always maintaining an emphasis on breaking down traditional barriers that exist
between performers and audience members and performing at the highest level. Vento Chiaro presents
recitals throughout the Boston area and around the country. They have been the woodwind quintet in
residence at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute since 2002, and they have conducted
educational residencies at MIT, Providence College, The Rivers School Conservatory, and the
Virginia Arts Festival. They collaborate regularly with living composers and recently performed
a concert focusing on the music of composers with connections to Tufts University, including two
world premiers. They aim to bring joy and a sense of connection to all of their musical endeavors.
As one of the countrys foremost woodwind quintets, Vento Chiaro captivates audiences with engaging
performances and inspiring residencies. Founded at the Peabody Conservatory in 1997 and currently
based in Boston, the ensemble places a strong emphasis on breaking down the traditional barriers
that exist between performers and audience members. Vento Chiaro's mission is to establish the
woodwind quintet as a virtuosic ensemble through engaging performances of the highest level of
artistic expression, cultivating a sense of community with audience members, and collaboratively
exploring works of all time periods with particular emphasis on the art of contemporary composers.
Vento Chiaro has been the woodwind quintet in residence at the Boston University Tanglewood
Institute since 2002. During the summer of 2017, the ensemble performed Gillingham's Concerto for
Woodwind Quintet and Wind Ensemble with the BUTI Young Artists Wind Ensemble at their season's
final concert in Ozawa Hall in honor of their 20th Anniversary. Vento Chiaro was the Ensemble in
Residence at the Longy School of Music from 1999-2006, and has held short-term residencies at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Providence College, Rockport Chamber Festival, The Rivers
School Conservatory, Orange County School for the Arts, Virginia Arts Festival and secondary
schools throughout the United States.
In addition to presenting their own recital series in the greater Boston area, Vento Chiaro
performs in locations throughout New England and across the country. Their self-titled debut
recording on Ongaku records received critical acclaim from Fanfare Magazine and Music-Web
International, and they have frequently appeared on WGBH radio. In addition to performances of
the standard repertoire, Vento Chiaro regularly collaborates with living composers and performers.
They have premiered works by Justin Casinghino, Robert Dick, Howard Frazin and Michael Gandolfi
and have other commissioning projects in the works.
Vento Chiaro has garnered top prizes in prestigious chamber music competitions including the
silver medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the Saunderson Award at the Coleman
Chamber Music Competition. The ensemble was also a recipient of several grants from the Free For
All Concert Fund which supported a series of free, accessible hour-long concerts and presentations
in non-traditional venues throughout the Boston metro area.
Ona Jonaityte, flute
Flutist Ona Jonaityte is recognized for her "exceptional talent, poise and drive, as well as
technical achievement and the ability to communicate devotion to flute music through performance".
Currently Ona is a piccolo player with the Indian Hill Symphony. She has performed with various
orchestras, including New World Symphony, Detroit Symphony and Boston Lyric Opera.
Ona is a first prizewinner of 27th James Pappoutsakis Competition, YAMAHA Woodwind Competition,
and International Juodkrante Flute Competition.
In 2010 she received the Artist Diploma in Performance and in 2006 the Graduate Performance Diploma
at The Boston Conservatory where she studied with Ms. Linda Toote. In 2004 Ona studied in France at
The Lyon National Conservatory of Music and Dance with Mr. Philippe Bernold and Mrs. Emannuelle
Reville. In 2006 she graduated from The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater with Masters in
Performance and Teaching where she studied with Mr. Algirdas Vizgirda.
Since 2009 Jonaityte has been teaching and performing at The Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
She is a board member of the James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition and the faculty at Indian Hill
Music, Beaver Country Day School, Brimmer and May School.
Elizabeth England, oboe
Elizabeth England joined the Boston Ballet Orchestra in 2016 where she plays second oboe and English
horn. In addition to her work with the Ballet, Ms. England maintains a busy freelance schedule with
many of New England's top ensembles including the Boston Pops, the Boston Lyric Opera, Marsh Chapel
Collegium, and Rhode Island Philharmonic. Additional performances include appearances with the Buffalo
Philharmonic, the Glimmerglass Festival, Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, and the Florida Grand Opera.
A dedicated advocate of new music, Ms. England has performed with Sound Icon, Harvard's Fromm Players,
East Coast Contemporary Ensemble, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Equilibrium Ensemble, Ludovico
Ensemble, Callithumpian Consort, East Coast Scoring, Brandeis New Music, and the Boston Microtonal
Society. She can be heard on recordings for Navona, Tzadik, Why Twist The Hair, and Ludovico Ensemble records.
Originally from Edina, Minnesota, Ms. England holds a Bachelor of Music degree from New England
Conservatory where she studied with Mark McEwen. In 2013, she was a recipient of the St. Botolph Club
Foundation's Emerging Artist in Music Award.
Juliet Lai, clarinet
Chi-Ju Juliet Lai, clarinet, is an active chamber and orchestral musician, as well as pedagogue.
A native of Taiwan and later resident of Hong Kong, she came to America at the age of thirteen to
pursue her musical studies. She holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance from Boston
University, M.M. from Yale University and B.M. from Rice University. She also attended Interlochen Arts
Academy. Her teachers include Thomas Martin, David Shifrin, Deborah Chodacki, Phillip Rehfeldt and David Peck.
Miss Lai currently holds the Second/Assistant Clarinet position in Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. She is
an active freelancer and has appeared in performances with many local as well as national and international
orchestras, including Charleston Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina, Tyrol Symphony Orchestra in Austria,
and local orchestras such as Cape Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, Glenn Falls Symphony,
Gardner Chamber Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony and ALEA III. As an avid chamber musician, Miss
Lai has performed frequently in a wide spectrum of chamber music concerts, from contemporary works by
living composers to works from the golden era of harmoniemusik. She is the founding member of Boston Octet
and Anemoi Quintet. Previously, she appeared with the United Woodwind Quintet in a concert tour to Japan
where she also taught Masterclasses. She was also a member of Xanthos Ensemble, a contemporary chamber ensemble.
Miss Lai is currently on faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy, University of Rhode Island, College of the
Holy Cross and Bridgewater State University.
Anne Howarth, horn
Horn player Anne Howarth has a passion for small group collaborations and the opportunities they offer
performers and audience members alike to forge personal connections with the music and with each other.
Anne is a founding member and Outreach Director of the mixed-instrumentation chamber group Radius Ensemble,
is a senior member of the wind quintet Vento Chiaro, and has recently joined Juventas New Music Ensemble.
A strong proponent of new music, Anne has commissioned works for chamber ensemble as an individual and with
Vento Chiaro. Anne is also a freelance orchestral player in demand in the greater Boston area, holding
Principal Horn chairs with the Lexington Symphony and Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and occasionally
heard with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, A Far Cry, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, the Rhode Island
Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Curious about the intersection between live music and
movement, Anne has collaborated with Monkeyhouse and dancer/choreographer Karen Krolak at First Night
Boston, the Oberon, and Tufts University. Anne is a native of the Detroit area, holds undergraduate
degrees in both Horn Performance and Environmental Studies from Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College
respectively, and earned her Master of Music in Performance at New England Conservatory. Anne teaches
horn and coaches chamber music at Tufts University and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI),
maintains a private studio, and is on the on faculties of the New England Conservatory Preparatory
School, the Brookline Music School, Milton Academy and the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Sam Childers, bassoon
Sam Childers joins Vento Chiaro after performing with the quintet on numerous occasions throughout the
2013/2014 season. As a chamber musician, he has performed with the Santa Monica Symphony Wind Quintet,
Chamber Players of Los Angeles, and the University of Michigan Faculty Chamber Players. Sam was a member
of the Missoula Symphony while a student and has since performed with the Ann Arbor Symphony, Toledo
Symphony, Colorado Symphony, and Boston Pops Orchestra. He studied music and bassoon at the University
of Montana and the University of Michigan. His primary teachers were Roger McDonald and Richard Beene.
