Event

Kalmo Refugee Fundraiser Spring Fling
Celebrate the spring equinox and World Storytelling Day with this fundraiser for the Kalmo Refugee Support Group. This family-oriented fundraiser featuring Jewish performers and food is an opportunity for people of all ages and cultures to come together in community and raise funds for reunification of a Somali Muslim family. The night will include klezmer music, participatory interactive storytelling led by Maggidah Shoshana Litman, sweet and savory snacks, and a silent auction.

This event takes place on the first night of Purim, a complex Jewish holiday that is both a time of celebrating survival and resilience and also a time for acknowledging the impacts of violence on relationship between peoples and pledging to create a community where everyone can live in peace, justice, and harmonious relationship.

Doors will open at 6:30 with the event starting at 7:00 PM.

TICKETS

As this is a fundraiser we ask that people pay full ticket price if they can, and there will also be invitation for additional cash donations at the event. However nobody will be turned away for lack of funds and there is a "pay what you can" option. Note that ticket pricing includes an option for free tickets for people from local Indigenous nations and for refugee families.

TERRITORY ACKNOWLEDGMENT

This event takes place on Lkwungen Territory, the ancestral and current home of Chekonein, Chilcowitch, Swengwhung, Kosampsom, Whyomilth, Teechamitsa, and Kakyaakan family groups continuing today as Songhees and Esquimalt nations. Recognizing that ensuring everyone in the world has a safe place to live is inextricably entwined with decolonization, the event will begin with reflection on the local context.

PERFORMERS

The Klezbians are an enthusiastic, high-energy local band playing the traditional music of Eastern European Jews (Klezmer) with jazzy overtones. Get ready to dance!

Shoshana Litman is Canada's first ordained Maggidah (a female Jewish storyteller, inspirational speaker and teacher). Shoshana's interactive storytelling inspires audiences of all ages to awaken to the deeper joys of life. Shoshana will be sharing Jewish and Somali stories. http://www.maggidah.com/

FOOD

Enjoy a wide variety of snacks including recipes handed down by Ashkenazi Jewish bubbes to the current generation! Look forward to knishes, kmish broit, hamantaschen, rugelach, and a wide selection of cookies, bars, muffins, and other treats. All food will be vegetarian/vegan, and there will be gluten-free options. This event is all ages and alcohol will not be served, but we will have coffee, tea, and other beverages.

ACCESSIBILITY

Please do not wear scented products (perfume, cologne, fragranced hair products, clothes recently washed with fragranced soap or dryer sheets, etc.) to this event. While this is a space used by many groups and we cannot ensure it is a chemical-free space, we can at least make a collective effort to create a fragrance-reduced space so people with respiratory conditions and MCS can more readily participate. We will be bringing our own fragrance-free soap for washrooms. More info about chemical injury and ways to improve access:
