2nd Annual UPLift Jazz Festival
Join us for an evening of jazz at the second annual UPLift Jazz Festival, featuring the Zack Varner Quartet and the Pamela Hart Quartet.
About the artists:
Zack Varner was raised just outside of Atlanta. As a young saxophone player, he developed an insatiable curiosity for music. Now a seasoned professional with a wide-ranging background and more than 15 years of experience, Zack remains in constant demand on the stage and in the studio. He has performed with Joshua Redman, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Jennifer Holliday, Lizz Wright, Laura Otero, and many other artists. From 2005 to 2009, he toured the United States with the Atlanta-based rock quartet Jungol. The group released two acclaimed albums with Zack as an integral songwriter and multi-instrument performer. In 2018, Zack released Blues in the Nude, his first studio album as a bandleader. The critically acclaimed album includes 11 original songs and an all-star cast of Austin musicians. When not performing with his quartet at local venues, Dr. Varner engages his passion for music education as an instructor at Eastside Music School. www.zackvarner.com
Pamela Hart is passionate about the artistry of vocal jazz. She has devoted more than 25 years toward singing jazz and keeping the genre alive. A Los Angeles native, Pamela moved to Austin in 1982 after graduating from UCLA. Inspired by the vocal styling of legends like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and others, Pam is highly regarded as Austin's finest jazz vocalist, and was deemed "Austin's First Lady of Jazz" by Austin Women's Magazine. In addition to appearing at area clubs, restaurants, live music broadcasts, weddings, and festivals, Pamela and her husband, Kevin Hart, have produced (and she has performed in) the semi-annual Women in Jazz Concert Series since 1994. That same year, Pamela and Kevin also founded the Women in Jazz Association, Inc., with a mission to keep jazz alive. The organization has been growing ever since providing concerts, vocal workshops, and youth programs geared towards jazz education and performance. www.pamelahart.com
