AFRO-PUNK- With Director James Spooner
Join us as we welcome director James Spooner in an exploration of the Black punk movement and its enduring cultural impact. One night only screening of the award winning "Afro-Punk."
The movie that sparked a movement. "Afro-Punk" explores the experiences of black punk and hardcore kids within a predominantly white subculture.
Through exclusive interviews with punks and various punk rock bands including, Fishbone, 24-7 Spyz, and Dead Kennedys, Spooner's documentary covered issues of loneliness, exile, inter-racial dating, and the double lives people of color lead within a predominately white sub-cultured community.
The film raises questions around black identity, marginalization, the double consciousness of black Americans, and alienation. Its also a time capsule for what black alternative youth experienced just as the world was beginning to shift with the power of the internet.
The Afro-Punk film also inspired the now international Afro-Punk Festival. Originally co-founded by Spooner, it has become a highly anticipated (and often controversial) event in New York, Atlanta, London, Paris and Johannesburg with audiences over 75,000.
