House Concert with Hoot & Holler (Ashville) @SIGNoftheWAGON
Hoot and Holler are the sum of two parts: guitarist Mark Kilianski and fiddler Amy Alvey. Each are songwriters dedicated to honing their craft. They are influenced by wordsmiths like Gillian Welch and Townes van Zandt, as much as authentic mountain musicians like Roscoe Holcomb and Ola Belle Reed. In 2016, they lived out of a camper van and played shows across the country. Their enduring love of American folk music sporadically bases them in Asheville, North Carolina as they continue to extensively tour the US. This Fall marks their first overseas trip - a 4 week tour spanning the East Coast of Australia.
Hoot and Holler has been touring the states for 5 years with notable gigs at The Blackpot Festival, Old Tone Music Festival, Whispering Beard Folk Festival, Portland Old Time Gathering, and opening for Ricky Skaggs at the Ludlow Garage in Cincinnati, OH, among many others. These two have also collectively won prizes at guitar, banjo, fiddle, and band contests at the following Old Time fiddlers' conventions: Galax, VA; Mt. Airy, NC; Surrey Country, NC; Flagpond, TN; Pickens, SC; and Clifftop (the WV Appalachian String Band Festival).
"A fresh and distinctive blend that can only be earned the hard way - through thousands of miles and hundreds of nights on the road."
-Patrick Coman, WUMB's Local Folk
"I had only ever heard Amy and Mark play fiddle tunes, so I knew they had great instrumental and vocal skills. I'm the kind of guy that tends to listen only to traditional music, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I got a copy of their new CD. Surprise! I was delighted to discover that I really liked their original songs, too. Everything -- the instrumentals, vocals, songwriting, arrangements, and quality of recording -- is just wonderful. Congrats to Amy and Mark on a great new release."
