Event
The Souls of Art Folk
As a pre-Pittsburgh Black Pride event, The Souls of Art Folk is Garden of Peace Project's largest fundraising event, we host Young Midas and guests to celebrate the SoulFULL art of LGBTQIA and HIV+ Community, in collaboration with POPgh, August Wilson Center, Pittsburgh Black Pride, and Graphic Anatomy.
The Souls of Art Folk was inspired by W.E.B Du Bois and his book, "The Souls of Black Folk." In his book, Du Bois asks the essential question, "How does it feel to be a problem?" Further, Du Bois coined the term "double consciousness". In 1903, Du Bois referred to double consciousness as the challenge of reconciling Black skin and European upbringing and acculturation.
Today, we recognize double consciousness as a theoretical model and a way to understand the many divisions existing in American society. The theory can be more generally applied and used to describe any individual whose identity is divided between two or more cultures. For the American LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, invisible minorities, asexual, and allies) and HIV+ communities, individuals have been raised with the societal expectations of heterosexuality, often called heteronormativity. Or, there is a stigma that the high rates of HIV among men who have sex with men is due to promiscuous sexual behavior. Or further, that all men and all women have the genitals. Lastly, the belief that every person identifies with one extreme of the gender continuum, claiming man or woman as their gender identity.
At The Souls of Art Folk annual benefit, artists will express what it feels to be seen as "a problem" and what it does to the soul to live in a society that expects you to be or act as something you are not?
The Souls of Art Folk fundraiser event will allow us to offer more programs, like our free health and wellness event, and services, like our name change fund to all LGBTQIA and HIV+ members.
The Souls of Art Folk will be held on Friday, September 13, 2013 at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture with doors opening at 6:00pm and show beginning at 7:00pm. The Souls of Art Folk event is sure to become Garden of Peace Project's signature event and, in this first year, will feature local musicians and artwork from local artists and beyond.
The Souls of Art Folk event will be a "Green Tie and Dress" Affair. And, we will have a nice basket for the evening's "Best Dressed Couple."
We are looking for volunteers and sponsors to make The Souls of Art Folk a success. To inquire about volunteer and sponsorship possibilities please contact Garden of Peace Project at info@gardenofpeaceproject.org
