IT IS NO DREAM: THE LIFE OF THEODOR HERZL 2:00 PM ST. LOUIS PREMIERE USA ENGLISH DIRECTOR: RICHARD TRANK DOCUMENTARY: 97 MIN.
A compelling profile. Against all odds, a cosmopolitan Viennese playwright and journalist becomes the father of the state of Israel. Born in Budapest to an assimilated family, Herzl had little connection to his Jewish heritage. While working as a newspaper reporter in Paris, he witnessed firsthand, virulent anti-Semitism in the wake of the Dreyfuss affair. Advocating for and protecting Jews evolved into an obsession to build a Jewish homeland. The film expertly marries vintage photos, newsreels, historical documents, and scholarly interviews. Narrated by Oscar-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley and starring Christopher Waltz as the voice of Theodor Herzl.
