"Asma'a" by Amr Salama (Egypt, 2012, 95 mins) (Director in Attendance) - Alwan Film Festival 2013
In Asma'a, the careworn title character, played by Hind Sabry, is struggling to raise her teenage daughter and support her aging father. Asma'a suffers from a gall-bladder problem, but no doctor is willing to operate because Asma'a has a secret: she is HIV-positive. In a world where HIV/AIDS is stigmatized, Asma'a survives by avoiding situations that risk disclosing her HIV status and explaining the circumstances in which she became infected. Sabry delivers her role with deeply affecting grace and humanity.
