BOLO at the Garden Gate
BOLO is a dynamic ensemble featuring the artistry of percussionist Surya Prakasha(Trio Paz), flute and bass player Eliyahu Sills(Qadim Ensemble), and multi-instrumentalist Evan Fraser(Hamsa Lila). With a fresh improvisational approach, the group creates songs that will transport and entrance. With African-sourced grooves, African and Indian melodies, and song and chant, 'Bolo' speaks to the heart and to a musical language that bridges continents.
Surya Prakasha has been performing professionally for the 12 years as a jazz drummer. He has a bachelors of music from the Oberlin Conservatory where he studied jazz and african diaspora drumming. Surya currently performs with Gary Schwantes' Ultra World Xtet, Dan Fries and Trio Paz, The Dave Scott Quartet, Melanie O'Reilly, Amanda King, and The Pocket Trio. Evan Fraser is a multi-instrumentalist, performer, teacher, and recording artist currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Evan holds a BFA degree in World Music from California Institute of the Arts. His teachers include: John Bergamo, Randy Gloss, Alfred & Kobla Ladzekpo, Sulley Imoro, Nyomen Wenton, Jim Santi Owen, Mark Growden, Mamadou Sidibe & Yacouba Diarra.
Eliyahu Sills has been performing music for over 20 years on multiple instruments, including bansuri (the bamboo flute of India), and Turkish and Arabic ney (the reed flute of the middle east), the upright bass, and electric bass. He performs throughout the country with his critically acclaimed band, The Qadim Ensemble, whose CD reached #7 on Billboard's World Music charts, as well as collaborating with many highly acclaimed musicians.
