The OutBach® Festival of [Mostly] American Music Series Pass
The OutBach® Festival of [Mostly] American Music is Something Different for The City Different. A series of three concerts primarily devoted to music by American composers, performed by world renowned concert artists in the beautiful surroundings of the oldest church in the United States, San Miguel Chapel in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico. Concert #1, Tuesday 27th November 2018 at 7:00 p.m., San Miguel Chapel. Donna Coleman performs her scripted version of Charles Ives's Second Pianoforte Sonata (Concord, Mass., 184060) that includes readings from the works of the four authors for whom the sonata's movements are named (Emerson, Hawthorne, Alcotts, Thoreau) and from Ives's own Essays Before A Sonata. For the Santa Fe premiere of her unique interpretation of this monumental work, Coleman welcomes to the stage her Australian colleagues, authors Gordon Kalton Williams and Katherine Stewart as narrators, both of whom were present at the Sydney Spring concert in 1996 and have remained close friends on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. For the solo at the conclusion of "Thoreau," Coleman will invite a trumpeter (TBC) to represent Ives's father, George, whose musicianship immeasurably inspired that of his son.
Concert #2, Thursday 29th November 2018 at 7:00 p.m., San Miguel Chapel. Donna Coleman is joined by her Concord Trio colleagues Endre Balogh, violinist and Antony Cooke, cellist for a concert of duos by [mostly] American composers, concluding with the marvelous Duo for violin and cello by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodály, a work composed in the same year as Charles Ives's Trio (1914).
Concert #3, Saturday 1st December 2018 at 7:00 p.m., San Miguel Chapel. The Concord Trio (Donna Coleman, pianist; Endre Balogh, violinist; Antony Cooke, cellist) performs trios by Charles Ives, by his Yale mentor Horatio Parker, and by French composer Maurice Ravel, whose trio was composed in the same year as Ives's (1914).
Pianist, Author, and Festival Producer Donna Coleman's worldwide recognition encompasses award-winning recordings, major prizes in international competitions, concert tours around the planet, and invitations from music schools on four continents for teaching and performance residencies. Her American music research produced two world acclaimed recordings for EtCetera Records and earned fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the North Carolina and the Southern Arts Federations, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Foundation, Radcliffe College, and Second Prize in the first John F Kennedy Center International American Music Competition, among others. She is renowned for her interpretations of the music of Charles Ives, with two acclaimed recordings on the Etcetera label, of which the "Concord" Sonata (KTC 1079) received Frances Diapason d'Or upon release. In his review, Christian Tarting wrote, "This Second Pianoforte Sonata . . . finds here its most convincing recorded version, due to its assertion, the assurance in its manner of effectively carrying out each detail, its analytical finesse." Peter Cossé, writing for Berlin's Fono Forum, said, "She far surpasses a mere ordering of the interrelated, stylistically colorful material and uses her manual and didactic possibilities for a strongly moved, impulsive interpretation. Donna Coleman takes the aura of inaccessibility from what is in the truest sense of the word an unwieldy, complex composition."
Bruno Serrou (writing for Paris's Compact magazine) wrote of this same recording, "Donna Coleman offers a marvelously modulated reading of the composition [Ives's Concord Sonata] and extracts its true essence. The American pianist does a mirror playing of the work, full of nuances, and with a diversity of approach. She interprets this gigantic painting with complete technical mastery, and with malleable intonations, all fully at her command; she therefore has an infinite variety of ambiences at her disposal. The playing is rigorous and regular and constantly at ease. Never seeming to force things, Donna Coleman presents a magnificent album of poetic and colorful images . . . A very beautiful twentieth-century piano recording, an important piece of the Ivesian puzzle."
Roger Covell, writing for the Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald said of Coleman's concert performance for The (1996) Sydney Spring Festival, "Coleman's command of this vast and complex score [Ives's Concord Sonata] is complete. Far from being merely a programmed, hard-hitting efficiency expert in the production of keyboard sounds, she supplied magically soft passages to complement Ivess moments of gloriously tangled assertion. She even managed to follow Ivess direction to make a proportional reduction in the whole scale of dynamics for the final Thoreau movement. . . . This amazing occasion [was] certainly one of the outstanding events in Sydney music this year."
A dual US and Australian citizen, for more than two decades Donna inspired Australias finest talent as Head of Keyboard in the Victorian College of the Arts, produced dozens of world concert tours and direct broadcasts for ABC Classic FM, and created her OutBach® project that explores relationships between Indigenous, art, and popular music and creates performances in unexpected locations and combinations, including the world-first piano and didgeridoo collaborations. She recorded two compact discs for ABC Classics, Rags to Riches: A Syncopated Century and Havana to Harlem, and her own label OutBach® released Dont Touch Me, the Danzas Cubanas by Ignacio Cervantes (2010) and The Lost Lady (2015). Donna continues to tour the world presenting concerts, lecture-recitals, concerto performances, masterclasses, and Dancing with the Piano workshops, and her formal affiliation with Australia continues through an Honorary Senior Fellowship with the University of Melbourne. Endre Balogh has performed as violin soloist with orchestras around the world including the Berlin Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, Frankfurt Symphony, Basel Symphony, the Angeles Philharmonic, and the orchestras of Washington DC, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, and Honolulu, working with eminent conductors Zubin Mehta, Edo de Waart, James de Priest, Lawrence Foster, Milton Katims, and Christoph von Dohnányi. His many concert tours of the United States and Europe have included live televised recitals in Amsterdam and taped performances for the BBC. An accomplished chamber music performer, Endre won several Coleman Chamber Music Awards, and he toured the United States, Canada, and Europe with the Pacific Trio for nearly thirty years. He has also performed with Vladimir Horowitz and Leonard Pennario and participated in the acclaimed series of 1993 chamber concerts, André Watts and Friends. On four occasions, Endre collaborated with the renowned theater repertory company A Noise Within to compose and perform music for classic plays. A multiple award-winning photographer and graphic artist, Endres works are displayed in many prestigious collections. In 2010, one of his photographs graced the cover of Shutterbug Magazines annual Expert Photo Techniques guide. In 2016, the California Professional Photographers Association named him Number Two among the Top Ten Photographers in California, and he was one of only thirty-five photographers worldwide to receive the prestigious Diamond Award in the Professional Photographers of Americas 2015 International Photography Competition. Antony Cooke, cellist, author, Hollywood studio musician, composer, conductor, teacher, and astronomer, began life in Australia, trained principally in London, and built a brilliant career as a cellist in Europe and in the United States where he is also a citizen. In 1971 he became Englands youngest principal cellist (the London Mozart Players under Harry Blech), then Englands premier chamber orchestra, performing regularly with the ensemble as concerto soloist; during this time he also toured Israel with The London Symphony Orchestra. At the age of twenty-six, Tony was appointed Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of South Florida, where he also conducted of one of the wind ensembles. He held an Associate Professorship of Cello in the School of Music Northwestern University until 1984 when he relocated to Southern California. In Los Angeles he established himself as one of the luminaries in the Hollywood recording industry, and to date he has participated in approximately 1500 movie soundtracks and countless television and record productions and composed music for prime time television as well. His many recordings may be heard on the Centaur, PROdigital, and Golden Crest labels, and his compositions are published by Kendor, Studio PR, Kjos Music, and CPP Belwin, Inc. An informal, though intensive background in astronomy has long accompanied his music, and he has written five books on the subject, including the acclaimed Astronomy and the Climate Crisis, all published by the second largest science publisher in the world, Springer. He is also the author of Charles Ives and His Road to the Stars and Charles Ivess Musical Universe (Infinity Publishing, 2015) that features in-depth analyses of a cross-section of Ivess entire output, substantiated by forensic examination of the composers manuscripts.
