Living Composers Series - The Music of Mark Carlson
Bodhi Tree Concerts North is proud to present the music of composer Mark Carlson as the inaugural concert in its new Living Composers Series. This series will comprise one concert on each season, highlighting the body of work of a single, living composer. The goal is to introduce audiences to accessible new music in an intimate, informal setting, as well as introducing them to the actual process of composition, through in-concert speaking by the composer and a question and answer session following the concert.

Composer Mark Carlson's lyrical, emotionally powerful, and stylistically unique music has earned him the admiration of audiences and musicians throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. A versatile composer, his approximately 100 works include art songs, chamber music, choral music, and concertos and other large ensemble works. One of his thirteen CDs, The Hall of Mirrors, was a winner of the Chamber Music America/WQXR Record Awards for 2001. He taught music theory and composition at UCLA for 30 years before retiring last year, and also taught at Santa Monica College for 15 years. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Pacific Serenades, which was given a Letter of Distinction by New Music, USA, in 2013, for its significant contribution to the field of contemporary American music.

Performers on this concert will include: internationally renowned pianist Mark Anderson; Veronika Agranov-Dafoe, pianist/coach and Head of Music Staff at Opera San José; Peter Myers, acting Principle Cellist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra; violinist Mélanie Clapiès, a doctoral student at the Manhattan School of Music; Karen Van Dyke, member of the flute faculty at Stanford University; and mezzo soprano Nicole Birkland, whose performance credits include roles at San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Opera San José and others.

A significant portion of proceeds from this concert will go directly to help victims of the recent Camp Fire, through a fund administered by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Chico.
