This kind of thing, in William Lustigs stone cold splatter classic, is the mutilation and murder of young women on the seedy streets of 1980s New York City. Character actor extraordinaire Joe Spinell wrote the script and plays the title role in this deeply disturbing portrait of a man whose abusive upbringing turns him into a serial killer. MANIAC was given an X rating for violence and gore when it first released and was even banned in the U.K. as part of the video nasties debacle - scene after scene offers relentlessly grim, ultra-realistic violence thanks to special effects maestro Tom Savini, all of which will leave you speechless and, more likely, shell-shocked.
