Deep inside the haunting world of Edwardian Toronto, restless spirits occupy an infamous historic mansion when called forth by a meddling psychic. Unfolding amidst a bewitching séance, The Medium takes you on a candlelit journey from this realm into the beyond--where something sinister has taken root.
An eerie mix of immersive theatre and chilling vocals, this interpretation of Menotti's "The Medium" blurs the boundaries of traditional opera, as audiences are led throughout Spadina Museum. Guided by interactive characters, the ghostly plot unravels amid a series of themed rooms throughout the third floor--a preserved historic space left untouched since the early 1900s.
Revolving around a notorious psychic's decent into madness, and the vengeful spirits she invokes, "The Medium" explores the commercialization of grief and our fascination with life beyond death. For the love of money, Madame Flora promises to reunite bereaved parents with their recently deceased children, taking advantage of her patrons' grief for a price. However, as she dabbles in the dark arts, she accidentally opens a door that should have remained closed. Questioning her own sanity, Madame Flora comes to understand that despite both her deceit and disbelief, the dead respond when called upon. Provoked by fear and fuelled by the ghosts of her past, "The Medium" examines whether Flora truly woke the dead, or simply lost her mind.

About Opera by Request:
At Opera by Request we perform all manner of operatic repertoire in concert format, not such an unusual concept. The twist is that the repertoire is decided by the participants, not the company directorate.
For singers, we are an opportunity to learn and perform a role for the first time in a comfortable and supportive environment. For audiences, we present affordable concert performances by singers in the roles that most inspire them.
Two or more singers approach the director with a project suggestion. If the director is agreeable, and a mutually satisfactory date can be found, the singers and director form a cooperative whereby the remainder of the cast and a rehearsal schedule is created.
An hourly fee is assessed for coachings and rehearsals, excluding the dress rehearsal and performance, which are offered at no charge. The cast shares in the net box office proceeds, after all costs (hall rental, printing, other costs mutually agreed upon) are recovered.

About Spadina Museum:
Spadina Museum offers a glimpse of Toronto during the 1900-1930 period through the lens of the Austin family. The museum highlights the effects of transformative events on the Austins such as the First World War, the Great Depression and societal changes in Canada. Spadina Museum opened in 1984 and completed an extensive interior restoration in 2010. Spadina's artifacts feature the family's contributions to the financial, business and cultural development of Toronto through an intact collection and archival holdings, music, art and decorative arts.
The site includes six structures: a three-storey large house built in 1866 and enlarged several times up until 1912/1913; a two-storey garage and chauffeur's residence built in 1909; a stable/ gardener's cottage circa 1850; and a greenhouse built in 1913.
Spadina Museum provides visitors an opportunity to go back in time to a very unique period in Toronto's history. The site offers guided tours of the house and garden, school programs, changing exhibits and workshops, and also hosts one-of-a-kind special events throughout the year.
