The Blanket Presents - Christopher Williams
The Blanket's second project brings renowned NYC-based choreographer Christopher Williams to Pittsburgh to work with local dancers. The show will feature excerpts of the Bessie Award-winning Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins (2005) and its companion piece The Golden Legend (2009). The performance will feature live music by NYC-based vocal group Modern Medieval in collaboration with local musicians.
Join us for our Opening Night Cocktail Party in the lobby of The New Hazlett Theater after the show on Friday October 26th!
There will be a Q&A with Christopher Williams and The Blanket Co-Directors on 10/27 directly following the performance. This session will be moderated by one of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's dance critics, Jane Vranish.
***This performance contains Partial Nudity and depictions of violent scenes and may not be suitable for young children***
Due to the nature of the work, there will be no late seating.
URSULA AND THE 11,000 VIRGINS (excerpt) (2005): Inspired by the bizarre, fantastical, and often gory legends surrounding the martyrdom of eleven early Christian virgin saints, Williams NY Dance & Performance Bessie Award winning work Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins (2005) consists of dance portraits for eleven women set to music ranging from extant 12th century laude written in praise of each saint to commissioned original music by Peter Kirn for female voices and period instruments.
THE GOLDEN LEGEND (excerpt) (2009): Inspired by the fantastical tales mentioned in a 13th century work by the blessed Jacobus de Voragine known as the Legenda Aurea Sanctorum (or Golden Legend of the Saints), The Golden Legend (2009) consists of dance portraits for seventeen men set to music ranging from extant 11th century laude written in praise of each saint to commissioned original music by composers Peter Kirn and Gregory Spears for choir and period instruments.
